Trailer servicing

At Coffs Metal Works, we treat equipment servicing as one of the most critical responsibilities we have—especially when it comes to boat trailers. Too many trailers spend most of the year doing short runs to the local ramp, or worse, sitting untouched in the backyard for eleven months. Then holiday season arrives, and suddenly they’re being hauled a thousand kilometres up the highway.

While this surge in work is great for business, it also highlights a serious safety issue. Poorly maintained trailers pose a major risk—not just to the public on the road, but to you as the driver and your family. A failed bearing, worn tyre, or cracked coupling at highway speeds can turn a long‑awaited trip into a dangerous situation.

Regular servicing isn’t just about protecting your boat. It’s about protecting lives.

Welding Aluminium: MIG vs TIG

🔧 Welding Aluminium: MIG vs TIG

Aluminium is a beautiful metal to work with — lightweight, corrosion‑resistant, and strong — but it’s also notoriously unforgiving. Choosing between MIG and TIG depends on the job, the finish you want, and the skill of the welder.

Below is a clear, structured comparison.

⚡ MIG Welding Aluminium

Pros

  • Fast deposition rate
Ideal for larger jobs, long seams, and production work.
  • Good for thicker aluminium
MIG handles heavier material more efficiently.
  • Easier to learn
More forgiving for beginners compared to TIG.
  • Great for repetitive or high‑volume work
Consistent and quick once set up correctly.

Cons

  • Less aesthetic finish
More spatter, less control, and usually requires post‑weld cleanup.
  • Heat control is harder
Aluminium dissipates heat rapidly; MIG can overheat thin sections.
  • Less precision
Not ideal for delicate or visually exposed welds.

🔥 TIG Welding Aluminium

Pros

  • Exceptional precision and control
Perfect for thin aluminium, intricate parts, and visible welds.
  • Cleaner, more attractive welds
TIG produces that iconic “stack of dimes” look.
  • Superior heat management
Foot‑pedal control allows fine tuning during the weld.
  • No spatter
Reduces cleanup and improves overall quality.

Cons

  • Slower process
TIG is more time‑consuming, especially on large jobs.
  • Requires high skill
Aluminium TIG welding demands experience and steady technique.
  • Less efficient for thick material
MIG often outperforms TIG on heavy sections.

🧰 Why Preparation Matters So Much With Aluminium

Aluminium is unlike steel — it hides problems beneath the surface. Proper preparation is the difference between a strong weld and a structural failure.

Key Preparation Steps

  • Thorough cleaning
Aluminium forms an oxide layer that melts at a much higher temperature than the base metal. If not removed, it causes porosity and weak welds.
  • Degreasing
Oils, fingerprints, and contaminants cause contamination and black soot.
  • Mechanical cleaning
Stainless‑steel wire brushes, dedicated only to aluminium, are essential.
  • Fit‑up accuracy
Aluminium expands significantly under heat; poor fit‑up leads to distortion.
  • Pre‑heating (when needed)
Helps stabilise temperature and reduce cracking on thicker sections.
  • Correct filler selection
The wrong filler rod can compromise strength and corrosion resistance.

In short: aluminium punishes shortcuts. Proper prep is non‑negotiable.

🧩 Final Thoughts

Choosing between MIG and TIG for aluminium depends on the job, but choosing who does the welding is even more important. Aluminium is unforgiving, and only skilled professionals with the right preparation and technique can guarantee a strong, clean, long‑lasting weld.

Coffs Metal Works brings the experience, precision, and care that aluminium demands — making them the best choice for anyone who wants the job done properly the first time.

Welding Steel: MIG vs TIG vs Stick

🔧 Welding Steel: MIG vs TIG vs Stick

Steel is the backbone of fabrication work — strong, versatile, and far more forgiving than aluminium. But choosing the right welding process still makes a huge difference in strength, appearance, and cost.

Below is a clear, practical comparison of the three major processes.

⚡ MIG Welding Steel

Pros

  • Fast and efficient
Excellent for production work, long seams, and general fabrication.
  • Easy to learn
Great for consistent results with less operator skill required.
  • Clean welds with minimal slag
Especially when using solid wire and shielding gas.
  • Versatile
Works well on mild steel, stainless steel, and even thin materials.

Cons

  • Requires clean material
Rust, paint, and oil can cause porosity.
  • Less penetration on thick steel
Without proper settings or multi‑pass techniques.
  • Wind-sensitive
Shielding gas can be blown away outdoors.

🔥 TIG Welding Steel

Pros

  • Highest precision and control
Perfect for stainless steel, thin material, and visible welds.
  • Beautiful, clean weld appearance
Ideal for architectural, food-grade, and high-end fabrication.
  • No spatter
Reduces cleanup and improves overall finish.
  • Excellent heat control
Minimises distortion on thin stainless steel.

Cons

  • Slower process
Not ideal for large structural jobs.
  • Requires high skill
TIG welding stainless steel properly takes experience.
  • More expensive
Labour time and consumables increase cost.

🔨 Stick Welding (SMAW)

Pros

  • Great for outdoor and dirty environments
Works even on rusty, painted, or contaminated steel.
  • Deep penetration
    Excellent for heavy structural work.
  • Portable and simple equipment
    No gas bottles required.
  • Reliable in windy conditions
    Perfect for on-site repairs.

Cons

  • More slag and cleanup
    Slower finishing time.
  • Less visually appealing welds
Not ideal for decorative or precision work.
  • Harder to use on thin material
    Easy to burn through.

🧰 Why Preparation Matters for Steel & Stainless Steel

Preparation is the foundation of a strong, clean, and reliable weld — especially with stainless steel, which is extremely sensitive to contamination.

Key Preparation Steps

  • Cleaning the metal
Remove rust, mill scale, oil, paint, and dirt. Contaminants cause porosity and weak welds.
  • Stainless steel-specific cleaning
Must use dedicated stainless tools (wire brushes, flap discs) to avoid carbon contamination.
  • Proper fit-up
Ensures consistent penetration and reduces distortion.
  • Edge preparation
Beveling thicker steel allows full penetration and stronger welds.
  • Controlling heat input
Especially important for stainless steel to avoid warping or “sugaring.”
  • Correct filler selection
Using the wrong filler can cause cracking or corrosion issues.

In short: good preparation is the difference between a weld that lasts and a weld that fails.
