Coffs Metal Works – Compliance, Licensing and In‑House Trailer Manufacturing

Coffs Metal Works is a specialist trailer manufacturing and repair business based in Coffs Harbour, servicing customers across the NSW North Coast and the wider East Coast. Our focus is simple: build safer, stronger trailers and back them with genuine, compliant engineering and professional repair standards.

Our compliance and licensing pathway

We are actively building a comprehensive compliance framework so that trailer owners and fleet operators can rely on us as a one‑stop, fully authorised workshop.

Our roadmap includes:

  • Motor Vehicle Repairer Licence: Formal recognition as a licensed motor vehicle repairer in NSW, covering trailer, mechanical and body repair work.
  • Licensed Motor Dealer capabilities: Authorisation to buy, sell and handle trailers and related vehicles under recognised dealer arrangements, streamlining registration and transfer processes for customers.
  • Licensed mechanics and auto body refinishers: Qualified tradespeople working under appropriate licences to perform mechanical repairs, brake and suspension work, and professional refinishing on tow vehicles and trailers.
  • Authorised Inspection Scheme (AIS) participation (target): Becoming an authorised inspection station for trailers, enabling us to carry out compliance inspections and support registration processes in‑house.

This licensing framework is designed to ensure every repair, modification and new build is carried out under clear regulatory oversight, with traceable documentation and accountable workmanship.

VINs, trailer approvals and registration support

Modern trailer compliance in NSW is closely tied to national standards and the Road Vehicle Standards Act (RVSA). For low‑ATM trailers (up to 4.5 t ATM), manufacturers must obtain approval and a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) via the Commonwealth Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) before registration.

At Coffs Metal Works, our compliance pathway is focused on:

  • Ability to apply for VINs for new trailers: Working within the concessional and full approval frameworks so that each new trailer we build can be issued with a compliant VIN and recorded correctly on the RAV.
  • Correct VIN marking and trailer plates: Ensuring VINs are stamped to the required standard on the trailer frame and matched to a compliant trailer plate and documentation.
  • Trailer data and specification sheets: Preparing detailed trailer data—dimensions, ATM, axle configuration, braking system, coupling and structural details—to support approvals, inspections and registration.

By aligning our manufacturing processes with these requirements, we position Coffs Metal Works to handle the compliance side of trailer builds, not just the fabrication.

Full in‑house trailer builds

Our goal is to offer truly end‑to‑end trailer solutions—designed, fabricated and prepared for registration under one roof.

  • Design to delivery: From concept and load requirements through to finished, painted and wired trailers, we manage the entire build process in‑house.
  • Suspension, braking and running gear: Selection and installation of compliant axles, springs, brakes, couplings and lighting systems matched to the trailer’s ATM and intended use.
  • Custom and commercial builds: Box trailers, plant trailers, boat trailers, trade and specialty builds, all designed around Australian standards and practical, real‑world use.

Once our licensing and VIN approval capabilities are fully in place, customers will be able to walk in with an idea and drive away with a compliant, ready‑to‑register trailer built entirely at Coffs Metal Works.

Structural drawings and engineering documentation

Strong trailers start with sound design. We treat structural documentation as a core part of the build—not an afterthought.

  • Detailed structural drawings: 2D and 3D drawings showing chassis layout, cross‑member spacing, drawbar design, gussets, load paths and critical welds.
  • Material and weld specifications: Clear call‑outs for steel grades, section sizes, plate thicknesses and welding processes to ensure repeatable, consistent builds.
  • Load and usage considerations: Designs that account for payload, dynamic loads, towing conditions and intended operating environments.
  • Traceable records: Drawings and build sheets stored against each trailer model or variant, supporting future repairs, modifications and compliance checks.

These structural documents support our ability to apply for approvals, demonstrate compliance with relevant standards and give customers confidence that their trailer is more than just “built tough”—it’s built to a plan.

What this means for our customers

Bringing licensing, VIN application capability, inspections, fabrication and structural design together under Coffs Metal Works delivers real benefits:

  • One‑stop process: Design, build, compliance documentation and registration support handled by a single workshop.
  • Regulatory confidence: Trailers built and repaired in line with current NSW and national requirements, with clear records to back it up.
  • Better long‑term support: When repairs or upgrades are needed, we already have the drawings, specs and history to do the job properly.
  • Stronger resale and fleet value: Compliant, well‑documented trailers are easier to register, insure and sell.
