⚖️ What Is ATM — And Why It Matters
Your trailer’s ATM rating determines the maximum legal weight it can be when fully loaded and connected to your tow vehicle.
ATM includes:
- The tare weight (empty trailer weight)
- The maximum load it can legally carry
Example
If your trailer is rated to 1000 kg ATM and weighs 400 kg empty, you can legally carry:
1000 kg – 400 kg = 600 kg
Exceeding your ATM means:
- You are towing illegally
- You risk defect notices and fines
- Your insurance may be void in an accident
🛠️ Why You May Need an ATM Upgrade
Many trailers — especially work trailers, caravans, boat trailers and tradesman trailers — are under‑rated for the loads people actually carry.
Common reasons to upgrade:
- You’ve added accessories or equipment
- You carry tools, machinery or camping gear
- You’ve upgraded suspension or chassis components
- You want safer towing stability
- You want to ensure your insurance remains valid
Coffs Metal Works can assess your trailer and determine whether an upgrade is safe, legal and structurally possible.
🏛️ NSW Licensing Requirements — Why They Matter
Unlike Queensland, NSW has strict laws governing who can legally repair or modify trailers.
✔️ To legally work on trailers in NSW, a business must hold:
-
A Motor Vehicle Repairer Licence (NSW Fair Trading)
✔️ And the person performing the work must hold:
-
A Tradesperson Certificate in the correct repair class (unless the work is limited to underbody trailer repairs at a licensed premises)
❌ A Motor Dealer Licence does NOT allow trailer repairs
A dealer licence only allows buying and selling. It does not permit:
- Structural repairs
- Welding
- Chassis strengthening
- Brake upgrades
- Axle or suspension upgrades
- ATM upgrades
Anyone doing this work without the correct licence is breaking NSW law — and putting your safety and insurance at risk.
Coffs Metal Works is fully licensed and compliant.
