Coffs Metal Works – Trailer Maintenance Guide

🛠️ Coffs Metal Works – Trailer Maintenance Guide

Protect Your Investment | Minimise Downtime | Maximise Safety

Your trailer is a vital part of your business. Whether you're hauling machinery, livestock, or materials, regular maintenance ensures your trailer stays on the road—saving you time, money, and avoiding costly disruptions.

🔍 Initial Check – First 100 km

When you first tow your trailer, components begin to settle under load and heat. This bedding-in period can affect wheel nut tension, bearing play, and electrical connections.

After your first 100 km, inspect:

  • Wheel Nuts – Torque to 100 ft-lbs (135 Nm). Recheck and adjust if needed—avoid over-tightening.

  • Bearings – Check for play and heat. Re-tension if loose to extend bearing life.

  • Lights & Electrical – Confirm all lights and indicators are functioning.

  • Tyre Pressure – Check inflation and inspect for uneven wear.

🔁 Routine Maintenance – Every 6 Months or 10,000 km

Recommended for all trailers in regular use.

  • Wheels & Tyres – Inspect tread, pressure, and wheel nut tension.

  • Bearings – Repack parallel bearings with high-temp grease.

  • Electrical System – Test lights, wiring, and plug connections.

  • Brakes – Inspect pads, clean electric drum contacts, and test operation.

  • Breakaway Battery – Check charge level and clean terminals.

  • Mechanical Disc Brake Trailers – Adjust brake tension and grease hitch via the two nipples.

🔧 Annual Maintenance – Every 12 Months or 30,000 km

Comprehensive service to ensure long-term reliability.

  • Replace Bearings – Install new parallel bearings.

  • Suspension & Frame – Inspect for wear, cracks, and rust. Treat any corrosion.

  • Bolts & Fasteners – Check and tighten all structural bolts.

  • Grease Hitch – Lubricate hitch components for smooth operation.
